Financial Engineering within Computer Science

Среда, Апрель 28th, 2010

Computer science students interested in a career in business and finance should consider the financial engineering track. By judiciously selecting their open electives, broadening electives, and liberal arts core requirements, computer science majors within four years are able to: 1) obtain a B.S. in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering, 2) obtain (optionally) a minor in Engineering Management, 3) obtain (optionally) a minor in Mathematics, 4) participate (optionally) in a study abroad experience, and 5) participate (optionally) in a multi-disciplinary team-oriented senior design experience. Qualified students, after a fifth year, would obtain an M.S. in Finance from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Interested students should discuss their plans with their computer-science advisor in the fall of their first year and obtain a specimen curriculum for the financial engineering track.

Guide to Computer Science Internet Resources

Вторник, Апрель 27th, 2010

This guide contains links to significant computer science resources on the Internet. It is based on the { computer science } resource listing available as a subject guide on the University at Albany, University Libraries home page. There are, however, four differences: 1. Duplicate links have been removed. That is, links to sites that may belong in more than one subject category will appear in only one subject category in this guide. 2. Links to sites, such as electronic journals and bibliographic databases, that require a subscription and/or a license have been removed. 3. Links to several popular computing sites have been removed. 4. The link to a listing of Internet search engines on the University at Albany, University Libraries «search the Internet» page has been removed. This is an excellent list, but it was not compiled by this author. {Ultraseek} and { Alta Vista } provide good search results as long as the searcher understands the syntax of the search engine. For optimal results, searchers must read the «how to» or the «special features» sections that are provided. Searchers may also want to try using several search engines and comparing the results; or, using one of the multi-threaded search engines like MetaCrawler that simultaneously searches several search engines, removes duplicates, and presents results in a ranked order. The guide is divided into nine subject categories which are self-explanatory with the exception of Starting Points . Starting Points are internet subject guides that cover sub-disciplines of computer science like artificial intelligence, programming languages, and concurrency. Their purpose is to provide an organized, subject approach to internet resources for that sub-discipline.

Computer science A-level numbers decline

Понедельник, Апрель 26th, 2010

Results show fall in the number of students taking technology subjects

The number of students taking technology A-level subjects has dropped again, school leavers’ results published today show.

And the number taking A-level Information and Communication Technology fell to 13,360 from 14,208.

Despite the decrease of lower-level qualifications, 2007 has seen a modest increase in the number of applications for computer science undergraduate courses, according to Dr Mike Rodd, director of the British Computer Society.

Essays in computing science

Четверг, Апрель 22nd, 2010

Charles Antony Richard Hoare is one of the most productive and prolific computer scientists. This volume contains a selection of his published papers. There is a need, as in a Shakespearian Chorus, to offer some apology for what the book manifestly fails to achieve. It is not a complete ‘collected works’. Selection between papers of this quality is not easy and, given the book’s already considerable size, some difficult decisions as to what to omit have had to be made. Pity the editor weighing the choice between a seminal paper, perhaps widely republished, and a lesser known gem overtaken by subsequent developments. The only defence that can be offered is to reassure the reader that Tony Hoare was consulted.

Logic for Computer Science

Среда, Апрель 21st, 2010

From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection

This book discusses logic as a tool for computer science; a field that uses logic at all levels. It provides a survey of mathematical logic and its various applications. Some areas where it is particularly important include:

Digital circuit design Complexity theory (NP equivalent to Existential second-order logic) Database Systems (SQL; roughly predicate/first-order logic) Computer-aided verification (Temporal logic & model checking) Programming languages (lambda calculus) AI, expert systems, inference engines Distributed Systems Logic Programming Computer Security
